I intended to make a bird house with this, but instead it's just some kind of box. I was thinking of the video with the birds when I made the left panel, not so much the right. It may be hard to see, so if you can't tell what's going on in the right, there's a wolf howling into a loud speaker, a window with a view of a tree, and a bird on a branch. I collected the images out of book catalogs. There's a quartz pendulum, and chakra stones... Geneva's exploring those things so I am excited for her to get the box in the mail...

Betrayed Man Builds a Shed

There was more to it than he expected. Wood is forgiving but it has secret flaws. And because a sharp point causes the grain to crack, to split rather than collapse, he spent the morning blunting the heads of nails against the pavement. One nail, three scrapes. Nonsense thoughts fell into time with the comforting moderato triplets of the scratch: “the – black – eye … bro – ken – shoe … ap – ple – sauce … ve – ry – lost.” A shallow wound lined with concrete dust was carved into the walkway and the jar filled with slender nails. He did far more than the job required. He did them all.

Then there was an unnerving silence in the yard. Everything was as it always was. His bicycle leaned uncourageously up against the hose ring; at the bottom of the eaves trough the fluttering husk of a beetle was shackled by something microscopic; the eggshells in the compost quietly broke down. All the buried things in the earth were dead. But there was life beneath the plywood: pill bugs and centipedes quickly embraced and crawled over each other’s bodies on the panicked green-brown lawn. These sheets would form the body of the walls, perfect brittle squares cleverly pre-treated with an inviolate white undercoat. They communed with the 11:14 sun and blazed their shapes onto the back of his retinas. In their unblemished wholeness they shamed his broken heart. So when the plywood lay flat against the pine, and the pins broke the skin with one smash, he felt through them the satisfaction of crushing something delicate.

This piece was inspired by my friend Karen who asked me to paint her energy onto a canvas. This is what came out. Karen is turquoise and indigo and bright orange-red and to know her is to feel like a Big fish swimming in contented waters.

theme: Decomposition: This piece may have been influenced by a little trip to Betsey Johnson this afternoon. This aforementioned journey may very well also have been the influence behind the insipid anger at my shortcomings with finances. (And the fact that shortcomings do not produce archival rose-print cotton-spandex corsets to those afflicted. Hmmph). Which got me pondering my decaying, angry heart and the path upon which it is set to stop it’s rhythmic ticking, one day. But, not TOday and so TOday i painted this decaying bird-zombie Woman with whom i feel a very lovely and terrifying affiliation, in that flesh-rotting art-making delightful sort of way. You know?

Oh I didn't have as much success with this one. However, it was very satisfying to just run my blue filled brush along in lines, and getting sketchy with the pen was fun too.

My concept here was to show the tree is absent from the paper, meaning we use paper and wood willy-nilly and forget where it comes from. I applied the wallpaper, drew the tree, cut it out and peeled the paper back before it got too dried on. For the cameo I let the paper dry completely, cut and peeled off only the top layer then painted and drew the face, gold trim was last.

Absent turned out to be a difficult theme for me. There is however alot absent in this peice, mainly everything that was there to start with. Then there is the horse that isn't really there, the net that caught it is there but the horse somehow got away. Just like an octopus. Apparently, they can shrink themselves to get in and out of fishing nets. (Leslie told me that.)

I had piece of wood I used as a palette, with some black marks on it, and low & behold... a long nosed rascal emerged, and I embraced it! Human foot, lashes, hairy butt and all. The leaves are golden, like money... I thought of what my dad had once (or twice) said to me 'Do what you love and the money will follow'. Well my rascal loves mice and tree hugging, and I am embracing who I am, and what I do, and all that I love.

This is something I've had a hard time finishing. It is a wedding present for my friends Marlowe and Chad. They were married in September. Marlowe has, for years, wanted me to paint her something with sunflowers. Well, they're in there. Other than that "embrace" seemed like a good theme to incorporate for reworking this painting into something I'm more inclined to actually give them.

Ok So who said questing was easy? I may have thought that at first but I was wrong. Questing is tough and usually at some point you're going to hit a brick, or in this case a rock wall. But, once you get past that and focus your intent, concentrate, move through the labyrinth - Heck, do it a few times maybe like 5 or 6 trust me it'll get you somewhere. You'll be able to move back out into the world a new person full of, I don't know, motivation or inspiration or something then Bango! you'll be free and zooming around surrounded by pretty lights and whatever else your imagination can conjure up.

The Quest: Dying Bear at the Railway Tracks

Maps, dreams, mountains and a bear I once saw at the railway tracks, not quite dead, pulling itself accross the road. It was hit by a truck. Now when I draw bears I often include 'X's for the railway sign... it wasn't conscious this time, I just wanted to cover up a mess in the corner.

Everyday we are all faced with reflections whether we like them or not. So why not examine them further in our artwork. It's not like they don't get tossed and turned and puzzled over in our heads continuously. Maybe this'll help us let go of some of them or see them more clearly or who knows...just draw.

When Geneva suggested memories or isolation, I thought I would just paint another old 60's slide. But no, to keep it real my subject is from Xmas 2006. This small painting depicts the view from my camper... damp, cold, tiny, lonely camper. I lived here a few months in my Aunt's driveway, overlooking Victoria with its large sequoia decorated with lights.
